Summary

A thrilling instalment of John Connolly's popular Charlie Parker series.

He is our best hope.

He is our last hope.

On a lonely moor in the northeast of England, the body of a young woman is discovered near the site of a vanished church. In the south, a girl lies buried beneath a Saxon mound. To the southeast, the ruins of a priory hide a human skull.

Each is a sacrifice, a summons.

And something in the darkness has heard the call.

But another is coming: Parker the hunter, the avenger. From the forests of Maine to the deserts of the Mexican border, from the canals of Amsterdam to the streets of London, he will track those who would cast this world into darkness.

Parker fears no evil.

But evil fears him....

Geordy accent is a tough gig, even for geordies! Nice try though

Might need to take notes, but a very engrossing tale to compliment previous storylines
I really enjoy the English setting

utter brilliance!

Again, Connolly goes beyond brilliant, balance, prose & at turns; dark comedy. Like a poem of infinite depth, with only how Harding can really deliver. What a team..never end this series.

great entry in the Parker series, but...

truly awful English regional accents by the otherwise reliable Jeff Harding. Hard to listen to.

Great book but a little hard to listen too

I have read and listened to all the books by John C. The narrator normally does an excellent job but an English ear his English accents are awful. It make it hard to listen too. I also noticed a couple of anomalies in the English location. For example the lead police officer is a deputy inspector— a rank that doesn’t exist. Also the pathologist report included inches instead of cm. I will check my English written copy to see if this is just a case of the US version of the book being read.

A complicated, well researched delight

I researched what John Connolly researched and he has done a wonderful job. Charlie is largely in the UK and a country that Jeff Harding has portrayed with every nuanced dialect in the various counties. Jeff Harding is THE master narrator as Charlie and his erstwhile chums are the masterful investigators. The story is too layered to examine in a few sentences but a joy to listen to and follow chapter by many chapters. The descriptions of the churches and 'sacred' doom laden burial sites have been researched thoroughly...but that to one side, the story line never falters.
This writer is undoubtedly a master wordsmith.

Geordie

I thought Jeff's attempts at a Geordie accent were amusing, terrible, but they did make me laugh. Brave of him to try, though he should have watched Auf Wiedersehen Pet to get a handle on the accent.
Story was good, if not the best in this series.
