Summary

Another blockbusting beach listen from 'Queen of the Summer Novel' (People) Elin Hilderbrand.

Their secret love affair has lasted for decades - but will it last one more summer?

For the last 28 summers, Alice and Tom have met to rekindle the passionate love affair they began all those years ago. Each married to someone else, with busy lives and happy families, they've managed to keep their secret and to keep their love alive.

But nothing is forever. Tom's wife is in the national spotlight for her controversial and increasingly popular campaign for political office, and Alice has received a diagnosis that puts her future in doubt. Could their 28th summer together also be their last?

Missing chapter

Loving the book but Chapter 10 & 13 are repeated so this audio book is missing two chapters :(

Couldn’t stop listening!!

I listened to this every second I could, it was gripping and I loved the characters. Delighted to see there is a serving in the series.

Enjoyed it but it doesn’t quite add up

When I started “28 Summers” I had just one Elin Hilderbrand book under my belt. I loved “Hotel Nantucket” so much that I was thirsty for more of her fantastic writing.

28 Summers, though I enjoyed it, did not blow me out of the water like Hotel Nantucket did.I love the author’s writing style and the narrator was fantastic. I really enjoyed the segment at the start of each chapter “What are we talking about in …”. What I struggled with was the concept around Jake and Mallory’s agreement. So much wasted potential, and an uneven (and not worth it) unbalanced advantage for one of them. Plus one pivotal moment which unravelled in a way that was so in contradiction with the plot and the character that I lost a lot of move love for both.

I am still left with the urge to read the author’s entire back catalogue though!

The best Elin Hilderbrand so far

I confess to being a little obsessed with Elin and her books on Nantucket as it is one of my favourite places in the world. In my next life I am coming back as a person who lives there. This book was just another level and had me hooked from the beginning to the end where I shed a tear. My only slight niggle would be when the narrator is voicing some of the men as she exaggerates a tad which can grate but that doesn't take away from the unusual story line. I particularly enjoyed the beginning of each chapter which talked about 'what are we talking about'

Awful plot with boring characters

Not sure why this book got such good reviews. The main characters annoyed me so much. They have nothing but an annual booty call and if they were so “in love” they should have just got their act together and committed to an adult relationship. It just didn’t add up.
The narrator was great in the “Mallory voice” but her attempt to voice the male characters was absolutely awful. She sounds like Bart Simpson on crack.

Overall not the worst book I ever read but the story was predictable and uneventful. Wouldn’t recommend it.
