Volker Bassen is a father of 5 who resides in Diani Beach, Kenya. Half German and half Finland-Swede, he immigrated from Sweden to Kenya, after having finished his studies at the prestigious PADI European College in Cannes, France. He then went on to set up 27 diving schools in Kenya. Volker is the founder of the East African Whale Shark Trust and involved with a myriad of community outreach & marine conservation projects. He has 3 world records to his name. The highest altitude dive (14.400ft) where he recovered a body at 25 meters depth after a helicopter crashed into Lake Michaelson, Mount Kenya in 2008. The largest Tridacna clamshell ever found, weighing a staggering 530Kg, estimated to be around 250.000 years old. The pearl of Venus, the rarest and oldest baroque blister pearl ever found. The pearl of Venus is the size of a mango, in pristine condition and estimated to be around 260.000 years old. Volker has 5 children and loves telling his childhood bedtime stories to them. His children, Kim, Samuel, Siv, Noah and Eliana urged him to start writing them down and Santa & the Marulk monster is a result of their tenacity.
