Val R. Brown firmly believes dreams can and do come true. While spending much of her childhood with her nose stuck in a book, she dreamed of the day she would grow up to write her own stories for other readers to enjoy. Little did she know she would have to wait several decades before she could achieve her aim but she never lost sight of that dream. Catch up with her at valrbrownsbooks.yolasite.com Although she's always enjoyed an eventful, busy life, Val, a quiet, reflective person, has also spent much of her time observing people's behaviour and relationships. Without being aware of it, she stored away a vast amount of incredibly detailed information on which she could draw in later years when she finally took up her pen. Her first publication was written in 2014 to coincide with the centenary of her mother's birth. Stimulated by this achievement, she then went on to publish two books of random short stories. All three books gave her a deep sense of satisfaction but her ultimate aim was to publish a novel. Having reached that goal in early 2016, she then went on to publish her second novel, "Marlon", in December 2016 and a third, "Geordie Bell's Muggles" in October 2017. Her latest book, "The Girl in the Velvet Gloves" was published in November, 2019. Written as a sequel to "The Girl in the Velvet Slippers", this is one of Val's greatest achievements so far. Always positive in attitude, Val believes the long wait she endured before realizing her dream to become a writer provided her with a breadth of experience which a young Val did not have and that, added to her innate imagination, will be her inspiration for the many stories she plans to write. Books: The first book, "The Girl in the Velvet Slippers" tells the story of her mother's life and was published to coincide with the centenary of her birth in 1914. It is so much more than a personal memoir; it frames the story within a social setting which saw gradual, hugely important changes over the century. Always a Geordie Girl at heart, Val enjoyed using some of the local dialect and old rhymes in this book. The second book, "A Bit of What You Fancy...." shows Val at her best. A born story teller and observer of human behaviour, Val offers an enormously varied selection of short stories, allowing her imagination to roam at will. It also reveals her irrepressible sense of humour. Finding this such a satisfying book to write, she decided to produce a further collection of stories. Her third book, "A Little Bit More..." carries on from where she left off in her previous publication; this time she includes more short stories, a selection of her poetry and a modern version of an old fairy tale, First Full-length Novel Published amid great excitement, February 2016. "Freedom's Progress" is available in both print and electronic form. The book is an engrossing tale of self-discovery, with many twists and turns while also touching on a few profound topics but always evident is Val Brown's sense of humour and love of story-telling. Second novel published in December 2016. "Marlon" tells the tale of how a young man returns home after a prolonged absence to find that law and order has been thrown to the four winds, while crime and corruption thrives locally. Marlon's methods of dealing with the situation may not always appear conventional but they are often entertaining and occasionally amusing. Third novel published in October 2017. "Geordie Bell's Muggles" is set on Tyneside. Geordie Bell, the main character grew up in a traditional mining village, expecting to follow his forebears down the pit on leaving school. Catastrophe hits the village when the pit closes but the quiet strength and resillience of the inhabitants shines through, supported by their irrepressable sense of humour. A glossary of over 100 dialect words and phrases is included. Latest book, "The Girl in the Velvet Gloves." This was written as a sequel to "The Girl in the Velvet Slippers." It's considered to be Val's greatest achievement so far and this page-turner is an absolute 'must read.' Updated November 2019
