I’m a writer who writes to his son every day about parenthood from a dad’s point of view. My writing career started out as a complete fluke. It began when I discovered my partner was pregnant. The news was unexpected to say the least, because we were told we almost certainly wouldn’t conceive naturally. We were gearing up to start IVF treatment, but I’d already resigned myself to the idea that I might never become a dad. But then my partner fell pregnant naturally, and I discovered I was going to be a father – and my brain exploded with every possible emotion in the human experience. So, I sought out journaling as a tool to enable me to bring the tempo down and process what I was going through – a tool to help me prepare for the biggest identity shift I would probably ever undergo. And so that became my first book, Dear Dory: Journal of a Soon-to-be First-time Dad. My second book, Dear Arlo: Adventures in Dadding, continues the adventure of one man and his journal, as I examine and reflect on my first year of parenthood without pulling any punches.
