Thomas Ewing, Ph.D, JD, began his professional life as a Lecturer in Asian history and language at Leeds University, England, his specialty the northern Chinese frontier and publishing one history, Between the Hammer and the Anvil. Chinese and Russian Policies in Outer Mongolia, 1911-1921 (Indiana University Press) and several academic articles appearing in various European university journals. Thereafter, he returned to his farm in Oregon, now 150 years old. He became a lawyer with an emphasis on appellate law. Following that he was appointed Chief Administrative Law Judge of the State of Oregon leading an organization of eighty judges, retiring in 2010. His first love has always been history, particularly the Middle Ages. This novel, his first, began twenty years ago when he read a popular history of the First Crusade. He was fascinated, subsequently reading over 120 books on the subject. He tells the story though the eyes of a Benedictine monk but always with a scrupulous, uncompromising attention to historical accuracy. He lives with his wife of fifty years and their two sons in Mt. Angel, Oregon.
