Stuart D. Goldman is a Russian specialist and a scholar in residence of the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research, the largest source of funding in the U.S. for post-doctoral research on the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. From 1979–2009, he was the senior specialist in Russian and Eurasian political and military affairs at the Congressional Research Service (CRS) of the Library of Congress. Prior to that he was a history professor at the Pennsylvania State University (1971-78) and Wilson College (1969-71). A resident of Rockville, MD, Dr. Goldman holds a PhD from Georgetown University and an MS from the National War College. He has written several hundred CRS reports, memoranda, and Congressional Committee Prints. In addition to his book, NOMONHAN, 1939 (Naval Institute Press, 2012), his articles appear regularly in World War II magazine. He is an avid tennis player and an adventurer who loves skiing, scuba diving, white water rafting, and hunting. In January 2011, he was diving with sharks in the Gulf of Thailand (90 degrees F) and hunting wolves on the Mongolian steppe (-25 F) -- in the same week. He says that with a 115 degree temperature swing in four days, packing for that trip was a challenge.
