If the ingredients needed for writing a great book include life experiences, Stephen Black is well positioned. Not only a committed writer and the author of eight books, Stephen has a distinguished career as a visual artist, a television producer (Cartoon Network, Fox, CNN and Fuji TV) and has been a performer/producer for bands in Singapore, New York and Tokyo. His videos and 360 films have been featured at festivals in Singapore, Paris, Brisbane and Las Vegas. Additionally, Stephen has a distinguished career as a photographer, following a BFA in Photographic Illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Involved with game making and AR, Stephen is creating projects with Bubiko Foodtour, the inhabitants of Secret Donut World, The Dundercats and The Doughbots. From 2017-2019, with Sayuri Okayama, Stephen toured Southeast Asia and southern China; researching AR and local foods while documenting the journey in a book called Alphabet Spikes. Previous to this, he lived in Bali and Singapore, devoted himself to writing, an exception being SPOKEN a virtual gallery co-production with Eugene Soh. Other books by Stephen: Flame Magnet, Red Dot SAD, Contact With Shadow, Furikake, Obama Search Words, and Bali Wave Ghost. I Ate Tiong Bahru, another book, is a bestseller. "Black's love letter is one of the best introductions to a country and a state that you might read" Art Review Asia. "Unlike anything else I've read." Stephen’s writing is not easily defined; yet accessible. He juggles fragile private worlds, steely global realities, observations about life; and all kinds of sensuality, especially food. He has said that he is very interested in creating an experience between the page and the reader; an experience that could be emotional, educational, thought-provoking or simply entertaining.
