She thinks fiction should be able to make you laugh and cry - sometimes at the same time. Before writing the comic Mapton on Sea series, Sam taught English literature for many years. If teaching in FE doesn’t make you see the funny side of life, little will. The novel Mapton on Sea (originally published as The Last Resort) was longlisted for the Best Women’s Fiction prize and led to Sam’s life being taken over by the slightly insane fictional characters of Mapton. Since then she has published four Mapton novels and three Mapton short stories. There is another Mapton novel currently on the way and a number of stories brewing. In between Mapton stories Sam writes other novels, including ones for children. She also gives talks to various groups about some of her favourite topics such as the dark history of fairy tales, or how brilliant cinema is. She knows she is very lucky to get paid to write and talk about things she loves. Sam lives in Nottingham with her husband. She has a love/hate relationship with the squirrel who sits on her windowsill every day to beg for nuts and watch her write. Praise for Mapton on Sea (previously published as The Last Resort) 'Laugh out loud moments, tenderness and real heartbreak. This is a story of family and friendships which, ultimately, is as warm as the golden sand we feel between our toes. Great stuff. ' Leftlion Magazine 'I loved this book; I started it one Sunday morning and lost the whole day to it… If you want an entertaining, heart-warming light summer read then this is it.' 5 stars - Amazon UK
