He has won a number of journalism awards over the years, most notably as a three-time finalist in Australia's most prestigious journalism prize, the Walkley Awards. His career as an author grew from journalism and he has now written 15 non-fiction books, ranging from crime and mystery to biographies and social history. His 2014 book Sheila: The Australian ingenue who bewitched British society was an international best seller. Four of the books have been finalists in prominent Australian and British literary awards. One book, The Killing of Caroline Byrne, was turned into a successful television movie and another, Rose: The unauthorised biography of Rose Hancock-Porteous, was the basis for a musical. Two other books – Sheila and Enid - are currently under production as feature films. Robert lives in Camberwell with his wife, journalist Paola Totaro.
