Roben Jones,the granddaughter of a coal miner/union organizer, was born on August 16, 1955 and grew up in Hansford, West Virginia.From the age of ten, encouraged by her mother and her fifth-grade teacher, she wanted to be a writer.She moved to Gallipolis, Ohio with her parents in October 1969.At the age of sixteen,while still in high school, she published a poetry chapbook that sold well locally,and for which she also drew the cover illustration. She attended Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia for a year and a half but had no formal training as a writer.She contributed to literary magazines, read her poetry on West Virginia Public Radio during the eighties,and in 2000 had her first major publication in the anthology ''Wild Sweet Notes:50 Years of West Virginia Poetry.'' A record collector since the age of fourteen,Roben began writing ''Memphis Boys'' about American Studios in 2002 following the beginning of an online acquaintance with American's string arranger/bassist Mike Leech.
