I started hiking and climbing at the unlikely age of 65, with an equally unlikely partner: an irrepressible 20 pound Australian terrier named Emme. She had no idea she was a small dog and she constantly astounded other climbers who couldn’t believe she climbed with no assistance. Emme’s confident spirit gave me the gumption to try one of the highest mountains in the continental U.S., a fourteener (a mountain over 14,000 feet) called Yale Peak. She took that in her stride, as it turned out, much better than me. We climbed fourteener after fourteener together until Emme had done sixteen of them, with me never lifting her once over the rocks, through the streams or up and over boulders—nothing deterred her. By age 74 I had climbed ALL 58 fourteeners in the Rocky Mountains, possibly one of the oldest to accomplish that feat. What I loved in addition to the physical challenge was the problem solving, the natural beauty, the infinite variety of experiences and the wonder of the profound communication I enjoyed between my dog and me. I learned that it is worth the work to discover that it is never too late to find a new passion in life. And I learned that passion is the key ingredient to quality of life, especially later in life. In The Dog Who Took Me Up A Mountain I chronicle with humor, insight and even some advice on why passion is so important in life—it gives a reason to get up in the morning, to eat well, to exercise, to learn, and to live in the present. I explain how big challenges can be broken down into more manageable tasks that become more practical to overcome. And I pay tribute to my first climbing partner Emme, a dog full of purpose and joy. Climbing mountains turned out to be my story—yours can be anything as long as you love it enough to persist in its pursuit. More can be found about me at https://www.rickcrandall.net/about-me/
