I was born just after the Second World War in Ramsgate, Kent. I spent the first four years of my life living with my grandparents in a three-bedroom terraced house in Sawston. We had no running water, no sewage, no electricity, no gas supply, and no significant insulation. I went, after the eleven plus, to the Perse School where I studied science but fell in love with theatre. The teaching of English in a small theatre called the mummery left me with a life long love of all forms of drama. Shakespeare, Marlowe, Greek drama, mime; how could you not have mime in a mummery? I studied medicine but went more into the basic science. I ended up teaching physiology at Cambridge University, and I still teach there. It has been a privilege. I have met many brave and talented youngsters through my work; some of them are reflected in the characters I describe. My villains are simply the product of my imagination.
