I'm a writer, journalist, one-time saxophone player (and occasional guitar strummer) based in Sheffield in the UK. My latest novel, 'The Darlings of the Asylum' is coming out in paparback on 26 October 2023. It is set in Brighton in 1886. The heroine, Violet Pring, wants to escape an arranged marriage and become an artist, but when she rebels she finds herself locked up in a lunatic asylum in rurual Sussex under the regime of a sinister 'mad doctor'. Violet's identity crisis resomates with the gender controversies of our own times. I enjoyed engrossing myself in research about the psychiatric ethos of the period, both in Britain and in France. My first historical novel 'Wrecker' was inspired by the wild and gothic Cornish coastline and is told from the point of view of Mary Blight, a rebellious force of nature who becomes obsessed with a charismatic preacher who washes ashore after a shipwreck. When not writing, I enjoy music, films or walks in cities or countryside. And with a few fresh curry leaves and a well-stocked spice rack,I can cook a mean Vegan curry. In recent years I have become a climate activist.
