I'm an international bestselling author living the dream in my own slice of paradise, writing alongside white sandy beaches beneath picture postcard blue skies in West Africa. A British ex-pat, I live an exciting triple life: online as author, editor and writing tutor Mark Williams (my business name); offline using my first name Mick to pursue my charitable projects in real-life here in West Africa and very occasionally back home in the UK; and from my intrepid explorer days I'm known as Sainey Jones, from my African name Ousainoh (Sainey) and of course a hat-tip to the far better known intrepid explorer Indiana Jones. More on how that came about - and why I walked away from the First World comforts of Milton Keynes and now avoid the relative luxury of the tourist zone to live a frugal urban-village life here in West Africa (see my desk and bedroom in images) living as one with the local people - in future editions of my travelogue-memoir series West Africa Is My Back Yard). Living in West Africa presented major obstacles getting online back at the start of this decade, when ebooks became mainstream, so I teamed up with Grimsby UK author Saffina Desforges to get my first novels online and selling. With Saffina's help with marketing and distribution I've seen my crime thriller Sugar & Spice top the charts in three different countries - the UK, France and China. My other titles include the Holocaust novel Anca's Story, the two Sherlock Holmes projects (Sherlock For Kids and the Easy-English Sherlock series), The Ten Best Bond Movies...Ever! series, the travelogue-memoir series West Africa Is My Back Yard, the YA English girls' boarding school mystery St. Mallory's, and a host of others. I'm also co-author the the Rose Red crime thriller series (Snow White, Rapunzel, Beauty & The Beast) and the Rose Red Rhymes crime thriller short stories (Ring-a-Ring-o-Roses, The Night Before Christmas, London's Burning) and the as-yet-unpublished Dark Halo dark urban fantasy trilogy, all published or to be published under the name Saffina Desforges. My books are available in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Dutch and Chinese, with other languages coming soon. Work is under way on two rom-com mystery series, "The Taj Mahal Mysteries" and "The China Town Mysteries", and the three-pronged "Margate Rock" comedy-mystery series comprising "The Last Resort" (the DCI Camllla Quaif Mysteries), "Brailsford & Brailsford" lawyer mysteries and James Patterson, P.I., a private investigator series set in and around Margate. Other pending fiction works include "Puppy Dogs' Tails", the chilling sequel to "Sugar & Spice", and "Cold Blood", the third in the trilogy. Up and coming narrative non-fiction works include the "Romps Through History" series, starting with a study of Henry VIII; a geography series as yet untitled looking at how the physical world around us has shaped our lives; and Meanderings, a romp across knowledge as we know it. Beyond those, the To-Do list is a book in itself. Living long enough to complete even a fraction of my planned projects will be a challenge. As Mark Williams International I’m an authority on the global ebook markets and will shortly be publishing books focussing on the lucrative opportunities emerging in China, India and across the globe, as well as a series of short books aimed at wannabe-writers looking to get their foot on the first rung of the publishing ladder. My Holocaust novel Anca's Story has a very personal history. Back when I was fourteen I had a Romanian pen-friend called Anca who regaled me with stories of her family's experiences during World War Two, when many of her family members perished in Auschwitz. Anca was herself killed in an earthquake in Bucharest aged just fifteen, and I wrote Anca's Story originally as a tribute to my late pen-friend. Late last year I connected with the real Anca's brother on Facebook when he stumbled across the book in a Romanian online book-store, and he asked why Mick wasn't on the cover. He said Anca would have liked that. What could I say? And so occasionally you'll find some print editions of Anca's Story, alone among my titles, carries the name "Mick", just for Anca. :-) For all my other books you'll need to search under my regular pen-name Mark Williams, which I use to keep some distance between my work and the lives of my children. I grew up with the burden of expectations that I should follow in my father's footsteps, but while I greatly admire what he did for a living, that was not for me. I don't want my children growing up with expectations they should be a writer just because I am, and I certainly don't want their writing being judged against mine if they do at some stage choose to go down this path. In the event you ever visit The Gambia, West Africa, do get in touch by email before hand. I'd love to meet up while you're here, and show you some of the hidden delights of my favourite country in the world. I can be contacted at markwilliamsauthor@gmail.com Twitter: @markwilliamsint My literary agent is Broo Doherty.
