I was born in the small town of Andrews, SC but moved to the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina at the age of 8 when my father founded a church there. I stayed in that area for many years and attended Duke University for my undergraduate education and subsequently UNC- Chapel Hill for medical school. Thereafter I moved to a more rural part of the state, Greenville, NC to complete my medical education. Thus far, as a physician, I have worked in private practice and also in the student health clinic of a major university. The idea for my first book, The Suppression of Depression, came while I was working in my first job in private practice. I have always enjoyed writing, and one day during a short break, I pulled out a legal pad and began jotting down some thoughts. These thoughts came from reflecting on some recent patient encounters. I honestly did not expect that this writing would evolve into a book, but after working on it in bits and pieces, I realized that I could very well make a book out of it. My passion has been educating Christians about matters involving mental health. I have had many opportunities to speak to church groups about mental health issues and look forward to sharing my book’s content with others.
