ABOUT ME Originally, a native North Carolinian, I graduated North Carolina Central University and University of California Los Angeles. I've authored four books, numerous newspaper articles, and blogs. In the past, I co-created an exhibition of photographs and written interviews celebrating multi-ethnic families and multiracial people that was exhibited at the University of Arizona Rotunda Gallery, among other places. To date, the accomplishment I feel most proud of is when I wrote, spoke publicly, and organized the greater Southern California community on matters related to people with more than one racial heritage, and multi-ethnic/multiracial families. During those years, I made regular appearances on national television and radio shows (including the Phil Donahue Show), and was interviewed by major national and international news outlets (including the Washington Post, New York Times and Telerama Magazine of France). As part of that work, in 1999, I testified orally and in writing before Congress to advocate for the acknowledgment of individuals with more than one racial heritage on government forms. I am a co-founder and lifetime member of the vibrant and relevant non-profit organization, Multiracial Americans of Southern California (M.A.S.C.) www.mascsite.org/. As a multiracial person, I've gravitated toward anti-racism work. But I'm also an avid writer, artist, and recreational vehicle camper. Today, I live in Amherst, Nova Scotia with my life partner. He and I advance the expression of arts by sharing what we know about painting and writing techniques through classes online and at our store "Express It Now." We coach on power of mind philosophy as it applies to living one's passions. We lead workshops and multi-day retreats. Levonne easily engages the reader in a sad, funny, and poignant story of her childhood as she recounts a past marred by racism and the dysfunctional family life she left behind. Her transition from racial segregation to the integration of southern schools; the challenges of her first job, at age eleven, as the live-in caregiver for an elderly white woman; a rape and the death of her father are all part of a past with which she struggles to make peace.
