Kris is an author of two nonfiction books. The first is the award-winning non-fiction narrative, Monique and the Mango Rains: Two Years with a Midwife in Mali (Waveland Press, 2007), based on her experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer. The book has been translated into Dutch, Chinese and British English (in the latter, Kris loves reading how she carried a ‘torch’ rather than a ‘flashlight’ during her time in the village!) The second book, Shores Beyond Shores: from Holocaust to Hope (White River Press, 2018), is co-written with Holocaust survivor Dr. Irene Butter, and comes with a robust guide for teachers and one for inspiring book club discussions. Kris is a frequent speaker on the topics of international service and exchange, women’s health and how to foster community across cultures. She is President of CISabroad – the Center for International Studies, a fabulous study/live/explore abroad organization and a founding board member of the Global Leadership League whose mission is to empower and train women leaders. She is the proud mom of two adult sons and lives in Northampton, MA with her husband John and their giant black poodle Dudley.
