Born in the turbulent era of the 1960s in Camagüey, Cuba, José Luis Castro immigrated to the United States as a teenager in 1980. He has dedicated himself to learning and serving humanity ever since. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies from Pace University and a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Pennsylvania. He was later awarded Doctor of Human Letters honoris causa from Pace University. José Luis has spent much of his adult life working on health initiatives around the world, beginning in the 1990s as he helped build the program for tuberculosis control during the largest outbreak of multi-drug resistant TB ever to occur in the United States. That program remains the foundation for TB control in New York City to this day. He is currently the President and CEO of Vital Strategies, where he has led a rapid expansion of Vital Strategies’ portfolio to tackle the world’s most difficult health challenges, primarily in low and middle-income countries. The organization now reaches into 73 countries and has touched the lives of more than 2 billion people. In addition to writing and publishing articles on public health issues, José Luis is a passionate student of Cuban history and an accomplished writer of short stories, essays, and poetry, many of which will soon be published in an anthology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts in the UK, and has travelled to 98 countries. He now lives in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.
