José Ignacio Valenzuela, also known by the nickname Chascas, is a prominent and prolific Chilean writer and screenwriter who has been featured in film, literature, television and theater, in Chile, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Europe and the U.S. He has published a number of novels and short fiction, and has also served as professor and instructor of creative writing. His work includes almost twenty books published in Latin America, among which are best sellers Trilogía del malamor, Malaluna, Mi abuela la loca, Hashtag and El filo de tu piel. He was selected by About.com, then part of the New York Times Company, as one of the 10 best Latin American young writers. The script for his film La sangre iluminada, co-written with Mexican director Iván Ávila, won the support of the Sundance Institute in 2001. Miente, written by Valenzuela, was selected by Puerto Rico as its representative film for the 80th Academy Awards (2008). Amores, a TV series he created and wrote by him in 2004, was nominated for an EMMY Award (Suncoast chapter). His telenovelas La casa de al lado and Santa Diabla, both produced by Telemundo US, have been seen around the world beating audience records. He is the creator and writer for national and foreign telenovelas and series for Telemundo, Televisa, Television Azteca, among others. He has also participated in the development of various television, literature, film and theater projects in Chile, Mexico, United States and Puerto Rico. His original series "Who Killed Sara? "is one of the most successful non-English speaking productions in Netflix history. El año 2013 forma parte de la antología brasileña llamada "El último libro del fin", con el cuento "Fin de sueño". El año 2014 también es invitado a participar de la antología de narradores de Miami titulada "Viaje One Way", con el relato "Opiniones". En 2014 publica su primer libro dedicado a público infantil, titulado "¿De qué color es tu sombra?" En 2011 fue seleccionado por la revista About.com, perteneciente al New York Times, como uno de los diez mejores escritores jóvenes latinoamericanos menores de cuarenta años. A mediados de 2017 sale en toda Latinoamérica su nuevo éxito literario, llamando "Hashtag" y, a mediados del 2018, su nuevo libro para niños "Mi tío Pachunga". Para la televisión ha escrito alrededor de veinte telenovelas, entre las cuales destacan "Amor a domicilio" (Chile, 1995), "Marparaíso" (Chile, 1998), "Marea Brava" (México, 1999), "Sabor a ti" (Chile, 2000), "Lo que es el amor" (México, 2001), "Lola" (Chile, 2007), "Don Amor" (Chile, 2008), "Cuenta Conmigo" (Chile, 2009), "La familia de al lado" (Chile, 2010), "La casa de al lado" (USA, 2011), "Dama y Obrero" (Chile, 2012), "Santa Diabla" (USA, 2013), "La hija pródiga" (México, 2017). En 2005 fue nominado a un Emmy (Suncoast Chapter) por su autoría de la serie "Amores" (Puerto Rico, 2004), y en 1999 ganó en Francia el premio Prix du Gran Jury, como guionista. Su serie original "¿Quién mató a Sara?" es una de las producciones de no habla inglesa más exitosas de la historia de Netflix. Es autor de las películas "Corazón de Melón" (México, 2003), "Manuela y Manuel" (Puerto Rico, 2007), "La Sangre Iluminada" (México, 2008), "Las Estrellas del Estuario" (Puerto Rico, 2008), "Miente" (Puerto Rico, 2009), seleccionada como la representante de Puerto Rico a los premios Oscar 2011.
