Jonathan Myerson Katz is the author of the upcoming Gangsters of Capitalism: Smedley Butler, the Marines, and the Making and Breaking of America's Empire. His first book, The Big Truck That Went By: How the World Came to Save Haiti and Left Behind a Disaster, was a finalist for the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction and won the Overseas Press Club’s Cornelius Ryan Award for the year’s best book on international affairs. He was also awarded the James Foley/Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism for his reporting on the 2010 Haiti earthquake and cholera epidemic. Katz has been a frequent contributor to The New York Times and New York Times Magazine, Foreign Policy, The New Republic, and other publications, and was a national fellow at New America.
