I got into writing novels just to see if I could actually write one. I was an undergraduate English major and any English major worth his/her salt wanted to write the "Great" American novel in those days. I was no exception. Life however took me in a different direction. I wound up as a college professor doing research on difficulties people have in communicating with one another. All my writing was related in one way or another to that issue. It was primarily in the form of research reports. Once I retired and started looking around for things to do. The old desire reappeared. It took a slightly different form. i no longer had any interest in writing the "Great" American novel. I just wanted to see if I could write a novel. The challenge was to alter my writing style from the strict mandates associated with scholarly publications to fluid creative forms. Well, it turns out I did it in the form of the Allen's Fund novels. These novels are about the exploitation of children and people fighting to end the exploitation (all of these novels are available from Amazon in electronic, print, and audible forms). A second series, which I call the generational series, is underway. In these, I follow a member of each of the classes of 1902, 1922, 1942, 1962, 1982, 2002, and 2022 from birth to death. Some aspects of their lives are shaped by family, friends and the immediate community. Others are shaped by natural disasters, government policies, etc. These factors often lead to one crises or another. The result provides some insight into the generation gap and societal evolution. The first three of these novels are available from Amazon in print and electronic forms. The fourth novel (The Class of 1962: Luke's Story) is underway. Another novel ("What Now? A Realistic Apocalypse Novel") is also available but not in either series. It is my take on how people would realistically cope without electricity or electronic gear. All in all it is great fun and keeps me occupied. I find it interesting that once you create a character. The character tells you what you can and can't do with him or her. You violate the integrity of the work if you go against the grain of the foundation you laid out. In that respect, writing novels is very similar to writing research articles. I also like the fact that you can get characters to say things you believe without coming across as a preacher. I guess what it all boils down to is I enjoy writing scholarly or otherwise. One thing that surprised me about this process was getting questions about my writing from readers. The questions ranged from what my writing space is like to what do I do about writer's block. I answered several of those questions in a series of videos. You can access those videos by following this link: https://joeayrescares.com/?cat=444 (copy and paste it into your browser).
