James Claffey grew up in the Dublin suburb of Rathgar, after moving from the family home in County Westmeath as a toddler. His Dublin childhood, walking to the local primary school, playing in the streets, exploring the parks and rivers, helped shape his worldview. His work engages a world far beyond the environs of Dublin, and deals with the fragility of life, love, and desire. Chicago author, Ben Tanzer, says his work, “is infuse[d]... with rhythm and rot,” and that he does “things with words that I've never seen before.” He is married to writer and artist, Maureen Foley, and lives on an avocado ranch in the coastal Californian town of Carpinteria. He and Maureen have a daughter, Maisie, and he has a son, Simon, with his ex-wife. Educated by the Holy Ghost Fathers at Templeogue College in Dublin, Claffey has a degree in literature from the University of California Irvine, and advance degrees in education and creative writing respectively, from UCSD and Louisiana State University. His first book, a collection of his short fiction will be published in October by Press 53 of Winston-Salem, NC. His work has appeared in dozens of places, including the New Orleans Review, Metazen, Word Riot, Connotation Press, Literary Orphans, and Necessary Fiction. Claffey has given readings of his at various places including San Diego, Baton Rouge, and Santa Barbara.
