I've always loved stories, but it took several years as a journalist before I realised I prefer the kind of truth that lies in fiction, not reality. That said, the inspiration for my first novel The Dictator's Wife came while reporting on the 2016 US election. I'm fascinated by complicity, power and the manipulation of truth. The story is set in Eastern Europe, where I travelled for several months as research, hearing stories of lives under Communism and getting teargassed on my first night while attending an anti-government protest in Bucharest. My second novel will be published in 2023. The Birdcage Library is a story of long-buried secrets, obsession and murder. I grew up in Bristol and graduated with a double first in English from Cambridge. I spend more time reading fantasy novels than I like to admit.
