Erik Sherman is a baseball historian and the New York Times best-selling author of Daybreak at Chavez Ravine: Fernandomania and the Remaking of the Los Angeles Dodgers; Kings of Queens: Life beyond Baseball with the ’86 Mets; and of Two Sides of Glory: The 1986 Boston Red Sox in Their Own Words. He is also the coauthor of five other highly acclaimed baseball-themed books. Sherman was a 2023 inductee to the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame for his baseball writing and hosts the 'Erik Sherman Show' podcast. Sherman's niche is writing baseball stories of a human-interest nature that transcend the sport. DAYBREAK AT CHAVEZ RAVINE: FERNANDOMANIA AND THE REMAKING OF THE LOS ANGELES DODGERS was released on June 1, 2023. The book retells Fernando Valenzuela’s arrival and permanent influence on Dodgers history—while bringing redemption to the organization’s controversial beginnings in Los Angeles. Fernando Valenzuela was only twenty years old when manager Tom Lasorda chose him as the Dodgers’ opening-day starter in 1981. He became an instant icon in his superlative rookie season, earning awards for himself and a World Series victory over the Yankees for his team. Sherman brings a fresh perspective on how Valenzuela transformed the Dodgers and started a phenomenon that radically altered the country’s cultural and sporting landscape. TWO SIDES OF GLORY: The 1986 Boston Red Sox In Their Own Words, was released on April 1, 2021. The book details how, following an epic American League Championship Series win over the California Angels and just one out from winning their first World Series in sixty-eight years, the 1986 Boston Red Sox lost Game Six to the New York Mets in unforgettable and devastating fashion. Then they lost Game Seven and the Series itself. Two Sides of Glory portrays the losing side of the story about one of baseball’s most riveting World Series match-ups. With the benefit of years of reflection from the men who made up the ’86 Sox, this is the definitive book on this iconic, yet most Shakespearian-drama-like, of Boston teams. AFTER THE MIRACLE: The Lasting Brotherhood of the '69 Mets, co-written with '69 Met Art Shamsky, was released in March, 2019. Sherman and Shamsky organized a reunion with other '69 Mets--Buddy Harrelson, Jerry Koosman, and Rocky Swoboda--to visit an ailing Tom Seaver, who could no longer travel due to Lyme disease. It's a story of camaraderie, friendship and, sadly, the reality of aging. Timed to be released fifty years after the Miracle Mets overcame 100-1 odds to win the World Series. The book also includes riveting stories--many never told before--from practically everyone who played with or was involved with the '69 Mets--from the groundskeepers to Mrs. Joan Hodges, the manager's widow. Previous to AFTER THE MIRACLE, Sherman co-authored Davey Johnson's autobiography, DAVEY JOHNSON: My Wild Ride In Baseball And Beyond--released in May, 2018. Long before Johnson became a successful manager--taking four different teams to the post-season and winning a World Series with the '86 Mets--he was a baseball trailblazer, bringing sabre-metrics to baseball, winning four pennants and two World Series as second baseman with the Orioles, and incredibly being in the same lineup in the games in which Hank Aaron and Sadaharu surpassed Babe Ruth's hallowed mark of 714 home runs. He also still holds the all-time single-season record for home runs by a second baseman. But this is not a typical baseball autobiography, as Davey writes an filter-less, no-holds barred book about his challenges both on and off the field. In March, 2016, Kings of Queens: Life Beyond Baseball With The '86 Mets was released. Erik traveled nearly 40,000 miles around the country to meet with the key and most intriguing players from that charismatic '86 championship team, revealing never-before-exposed details about their lives, as well as a look back at the magical season itself. Previous to Kings of Queens, Erik was co-author of New York Mets' great Mookie Wilson's autobiography, MOOKIE: Life, Baseball, and the '86 Mets. The book made the New York Times Bestsellers' list for Sports Hardcovers in May 2014. Prior to working with Mookie, Erik teamed up with Pittsburgh Pirate pitcher Steve Blass on "Steve Blass, A Pirate for Life". This autobiography was released by Triumph Publishing in May 2012. The book sold out its first edition after just three weeks and is now in its fifth hardcover print. It's also available in trade paperback, e-book and audio book. Erik's first book was the critically acclaimed Glenn Burke autobiography, "Out At Home: The Glenn Burke Story" in 1995, which chronicled the life of the first Major League baseball player to reveal his homosexuality. It was re-released in Spring '15 by Penguin. He later acted as story consultant in the Comcast television documentary of Glenn Burke's life entitled, "Out: The Glenn Burke Story." A miniseries based on the book is being produced by Academy Award winner Jamie Lee Curtis. Erik began writing professionally at the tender age of 14 for the Community Life Newspaper in Westwood, New Jersey. He later became a stringer for the Bergen Record. He majored in Mass Communication at Emerson College in Boston, ranked as the number one journalism school in the United States, where he also lettered in baseball for four seasons. An accomplished author and professional public speaker, Erik entertains audiences with motivational stories about pro athletes who have dealt with and overcome great challenges and adversity in their lives.
