Personal Experience with Alzheimer's Disease makes Ellen's books so compelling. Following the death of her own husband from Alzheimer's, Ellen chose to detail some of the struggles of that difficult disease in a novel that also incorporates her own travels throughout the American southwest. Side-swiped, A Motorhome Adventure, is a funny, sad, and insightful story dealing with motorhome travel, dementia, and even a pregnant teenager. While this book is fictional, Ellen's knowledge of the subject of dementia is very real. Upended, the sequel, continues the story of Ernestine and Walter as they make their way home from the trip. With warmth and humor, the book further explores Alzheimer's beyond the early stages, as well as the physical and emotional toll it takes on the caregiver and the entire extended family. Ellen lives in Ashland, Oregon with her new husband, Jerry, whom she met in a support group while both their spouses were struggling with Alzheimer's. They now volunteer for the Alzheimer's Association, facilitating support groups and presenting informational programs. Ellen’s first book, Veda, is an account of her mother's (Veda) life told in "Veda's own voice." It is a Depression era tale of a young woman's struggles with an overly religious upbringing and the effects of that on her life and the lives of her seven children.
