Clare grew up in London and Birmingham. She worked in political communications and the charity sector before completing a creative writing MA at Bath Spa University. She is the bestselling author of The Year of The Rat, which was a Radio 2 Book Club pick, and How Not To Disappear. Clare has been shortlisted for the YA Book Prize, the Branford Boase Award, the UKLA Book Award and the Independent Bookshop Week Award, and twice longlisted for the Carnegie Medal. Her latest novel The Things We Leave Behind publishes in March 2024.
