For nearly a quarter century, Avis Lang has collaborated with the ubiquitous space advocate Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. At first she served as the senior editor responsible for his Natural History magazine column, "Universe." A number of the columns done on her watch later found their way into Tyson’s anthologies. Following the cessation of the column, she edited his book SPACE CHRONICLES: Facing the Ultimate Frontier (W. W. Norton, 2012). Next came their major collaboration as co-authors of the New York Times best seller ACCESSORY TO WAR: The Unspoken Alliance Between Astrophysics and the Military (W. W. Norton, 2018). Among their later collaborations is a work of speculative fiction, "The Pageant," published in the literary journal Orca. Formerly a Vancouver-based art historian, essayist, and curator ("PORK ROASTS: 250 Feminist Cartoons," 1981, representing 106 artists from 13 countries), Lang subsequently taught English composition at the City University of New York and is now a research associate at the Hayden Planetarium and a freelance editor/writer.
