An accident of birth...Every ten years the Imperium Provosts travel the provinces of the Great Suene Empire and take every second born child as the property of the Emperor. His due for their continued protection. Kalena, taken from her family and friends finds herself alone and scared in the imperial Stronghold of Darkon. And when she cries out to the darkness for help, Kalena is shocked when it answers her back.

The Empire is on the verge of war. The ancient enemy has returned and betrayal is thick in the air. Eight years after Kalena became a Flyer, she is being sent North with her wing to garrison the mountainous Northern Pass. They are the first line of defense against unknown enemy numbers. But what she encounters there, no one could have foreseen and is more dangerous than what the Empire faces to the North.

A flyer has been bought crashing down and Kalena is taken by unknown attackers. A search and rescue is organized with more dependent on its success than finding the missing Wing Commander. The stability of the Empire is in the balance. A tip either way will bring success or ruination.

Kalena awakes with no memory of who - or what - she is. A Dymarki family takes her in as one of their own and she works alongside them to help keep their home safe from the evil lowlanders. As she lives and works, she discovers that she has a power that is quickly growing within her. One that can help to defend her new found people. But what will be the cost of that power be to her "unknown" searching friends?

Women and children are massacred and Dearen and her newfound "family" race to defend the main Dymarki settlement from attack. A battle of attrition begins and Dearen and her people bring the war for their very survival to the gates of their enemy. 

On the eve of war, the good tremble. Dearen and the Ice Tigers are bringing the fight for hearth and home to the Bareskins. And on the eve of war, something stirring within Dearen draws her north into the mountains, searching for an ethereal promise that might bring peace.

Dearen and her uneasy allies are on a rescue mission to free Adhamh from his Arranian capturers. Kral Tayme, on the other hand, has given himself his own mission to remind Dearen at every available moment of who she really is. Kalena Tsarland, Hatar Kalarthri.

Dearen and her newfound Suenese allies are on their way to Daegarouf to enlist Pydarki help in their struggle against the Kingdom of Arran. But the journey reveals the tip of a hidden agenda that makes Dearen question who her friends really are.

Prince Garrick has returned to the Capital to complete the Muster of the Northern Army. Lady Felian has other ideas for him. After an attempt on his life, Prince Garrick along with Duke Malchance work to take back control of the Capital of the Empire from Felian's tight grip.

Dearen prepares to join the Dymarki in their fight against the country of Arran, but then mysteriously disappears. Kral Tayme, Hauga and Raga go in search of her while Lt Peana continues his search for his missing Captain.
