Frank and Joe Hardy, sons of the world famous detective Fenton Hardy, tackle their first case as budding detectives themselves. After finally finding out who did it, the dying criminal confesses that the loot had been hidden “in the old tower.” The tower is searched in vain, but it remained for the Hardy boys to make an astonishing discovery that cleared up the mystery.

Their instincts and intelligence were valuable assets for teenage brothers, Joe and Frank Hardy, as they followed in the footsteps of their well-known father, Fenton Hardy, a former police detective. They had wits and courage that gave them what it took to solve cases in their fictional home of Bayport in the upper east coast area of the US. They never lost their nerve despite being frequently confronted by danger. In this instance there is a robbery at the Tower Mansion and a friend of the Hardy Boys’ father is falsely accused. When they provide their father with some clues about some occurrences at a vacant house, and the possible identities of the smugglers, he suddenly disappears. The local police are of no help in locating Fenton Hardy...it's up to Frank and Joe to discover what has happened to their father, and at the same time break up the international smuggling ring.

During a storm they seek refuge in the house, only to return to their motorcycles' now empty tool boxes! The boys return to the apparently haunted house when they make a connection between the place and a smuggling case their father is working on. When their father goes missing, they have to investigate the caves beneath the house and confront the smugglers face to face.

Teenagers Joe and Frank Hardy had ample mental ability to reach conclusions and act accordingly. Some of that ability was handed down by their former police detective Fenton Hardy, and the overall concept was enhanced by their perceptive cleverness. If you want to be tense with excitement, here’s a chance. They discover a counterfeiting operation in an old mill, are trapped and face a struggle to escape. Eventually, they overcome the misdeeds and wind up with some of the phony money.

Frank and Joe Hardy, brothers who are high school students, help a stranger at the train station to exchange a five-dollar bill—only to find out later that it was counterfeit. Bayport seems to be flooded with counterfeit money, and people are on guard. But many innocent people, including Mrs. Hardy, lose money in seemingly reasonable transactions. The Secret Service and Mr. Hardy know something is happening around Bayport, but they cannot discover who or where. The Hardy Boys use their investigation skills and courage in dangerous situations to discover the counterfeiting gang.

In this unabridged recording of the third original 1927 edition of the Hardy Boys Detective story The Secret of the Old Mill, brothers Frank and Joe Hardy exchange some one-dollar bills for a five-dollar bill with a stranger at the train station. Later, when they try to use the bill to buy some pie plates, they are told the five is a counterfeit! Frank’s girlfriend, Callie Shaw’s cousin Pollie, accepts a counterfeit fifty from a customer, and the Hardy Boys’ mother does the same when selling an old carpet!

Frank and Joe Hardy, erstwhile teenage detectives, feel somewhat foolish after accepting a counterfeit bill while helping a stranger at the Bayport train station. Over a period of weeks, friends and family members fall prey to exchanges with counterfeiters, sometimes in transactions amounting to hundreds of dollars. Frank and Joe's father, the highly esteemed private detective Fenton Hardy, is working with the Secret Service to track down the counterfeiting ring, but thus far they haven't had much luck.
