When Roan agrees to join the Serpents on a heist in the city of Esmeraldi, she expects it to go smoothly. Nothing could have been further from the truth. On the run for her life, she'll need to deceive soldiers, generals, and inquisitors of her identity and gender. It's illegal for a woman to be a soldier, after all. Before long, she dives right into the hands of her pursuers, hiding in plain sight. At least Roan isn't facing down the Accursed in their mountain strongholds, hundreds of kilometers to the north.
