När två unga morddömda män skall förflyttas lyckas de fly efter att ha dödat två män, varav en polis. En annan polis, Dave, överlever och tar upp jakten på mördarna, varav en är en psykopat som njuter av att döda. Jakten når sin kulmen när Dave lyckats nästla sig in i ett narkotikasyndikat.

Dave Robicheaux sörjer sin mördade hustru. Han slåss mot alkoholbegären och försöker börja leva igen. Egentligen vill han dö, men hans dotter Alafair behöver honom. Långsamt, långsamt börjar såren i själen läkas. Hans stilla vardag förändras abrupt när Dixie Lee söker hjälp. Dixie Lee har blivit ett farligt vittne till ett mord och mördarna är beredda att göra allt för att tysta honom.

En tidigare polis detektiv och Vietnam veteran i New Orleans och en tillfrisknande alkoholist , Dave Robicheaux, lever ett lugnt liv i swamplands i Louisiana med sin fru Annie.
