Alone and forlorn, Rudeus arrives at the city of Rosenburg to search for his mother, Zenith. Despite his attempts to focus on the task at hand, Eris' absence weighs heavy on his heart, and so Rudeus gambles on a dangerous new venture to distract himself from his newfound loneliness--accepting an A-rank job all by himself.

Zenith--Rudeus's mother--has been kidnapped. Rudeus runs himself ragged searching for her in every corner of Millishion, following his late father Paul's orders to protect her at all costs. Ever on the back foot and outmaneuvered at every turn, Rudeus struggles to break through adversity and bring his mother back, safe and sound.

Rudeus has adventured across continents and survived run-ins with gods--and none of it has prepared him to watch Aisha and Norn when Paul leaves them temporarily in his care. Can he rise to the occasion yet again, or will parenting two preteen girls be the ordeal that ultimately defeats him?!

Nanahoshi, Rudeus, and the rest of their group take a trip to Perugius's mysterious floating fortress, seeking adventure and a once-in-a-lifetime chance to learn new magic. What they find instead is disaster, as one of their number is struck down by a deadly illness. How far will Rudeus go to save a dear friend's life?
