  • Episode 105: System Solutions for Physician Burnout & Micro Changes for Maximum Impact
    Jan 20 2025

Welcome to the Sustainable Clinical Medicine Podcast!

In today's episode, we dive into a compelling discussion with Dr. Diane Shannon, an expert who transitioned from internal medicine to becoming an author and coach with a significant focus on addressing physician burnout. Dr. Shannon shares her personal journey through burnout during her medical residency and early career, highlighting the lack of support systems available at the time. She delves into her work as a writer exploring the systemic issues contributing to physician burnout and how she eventually became a coach to help physicians build the bandwidth to not only manage personal well-being but also to advocate for meaningful changes within healthcare systems.

Join us as we explore the intricate details of burnout, the crucial role of system-level changes, and the power of micro changes to enhance the work-life balance for clinicians.

Here are 3 key takeaways from this episode:

    • Understanding Burnout Beyond the Individual: Physician burnout is often a symptom of systemic stress and not solely individual weaknesses. Recognizing this helps in addressing root causes rather than just symptoms.
    • The Power of Micro Changes: Even small, incremental changes can significantly improve physicians’ work and life balance. These micro adjustments might be the key to transitioning from overwhelm to a more sustainable practice.
    • Leadership and Systemic Change: Organizational change is essential in tackling burnout. Effective leadership that is visibly engaged and responsive to feedback can create a more supportive environment for clinicians.

    Dr. Diane Shannon Bio:

After experiencing burnout as a young primary care physician, Dr. Diane Shannon made the difficult decision to leave practice and pursue a career in writing. Her focus for many years was drawing attention to ways to address communication gaps, system inefficiency, and patient safety problems. Eventually, Dr. Shannon’s personal experience with burnout led her to focus on calling attention to the epidemic of physician burnout. She subsequently co-authored Preventing Physician Burnout: Curing the Chaos and Returning Joy to the Practice of Medicine.

Today, as a professional coach, she helps physicians improve work-life harmony and build careers that are satisfying and sustainable. In addition, she continues to advocate for healthcare system change through speaking engagements, her podcast Vital Signs: Thriving as a Woman in Medicine, and her blog.

In her spare time, she enjoys conversing with her three young adult children, traveling with her architect husband, and learning how to surf.
