Madness and Murder

By: Danielle French
  • Summary

  • This podcast is comprised of episodes created by myself and students enrolled in my two sections of Freshman Honors Colloquium at Kent State University. Based on their year-long inquiry into psychopathology, media studies, literary and film criticism, rhetoric, dark tourism, and true crime, these groups of students must decide the case they cover, how they prioritize information they've independently gathered and analyzed about their case(s), and how they employ rhetorical appeals to connect with their listeners. They research, write, record, and edit each episode. Join us!

  • Episode 15: JonBenét Ramsey - How the Media Derailed the Case
    Feb 22 2024

Authors: Gabrielle Hickman and Ellie Miller

Description: In this episode, we discuss the case of JonBenét Ramsey. Because her case was so highly publicized, almost everyone has heard about her death and the various theories surrounding it. While there is a lot to cover regarding that aspect, something that is not discussed often is the media’s interference with the investigation and how they terrorized the people involved, including her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, her 9-year old brother, and detectives working on the case. They also spread rumors about the case itself, distracting investigators from actual leads. The most unfortunate part of it all was that little to none of the articles or media covering the case focused on remembering JonBenét. This innocent young girl lost her life, and all people want to hear about is the gore and outlandish theories. This podcast aims to change that narrative and remind people to monitor their media consumption, especially regarding cases that have real victims who deserve respect, just like JonBenét.
