Learn and Memorize Tarot Cards

By: Quicklearn Quests
  • Summary

  • Tarot cards has been a journey of over 30 years for me. I took a two and a half day course to learn how to read tarot and I was hooked. At the time, I wanted to learn how to read tarot because I loved having my cards read and I wanted to demystify it, and also learn how to do it for myself and others.

Since this was a new skill, I relied heavily on learning the cards and the positions in the spread. It was a memorization game. It took many years to be able to put the stories together, and even longer to get out of my head and trust my intuition (which I still struggle with).

Tarot has been an exciting journey in my personal life. In my professional life, I am an instructional designer, course writer and digital content creator. Needless to say, it was a matter of time before I took on the personal project of sharing how I learned to read tarot cards, which truly was building on the basics - which is the symbolism of the cards.

Taking my experience in adult learning and course writing coupled with my passion for reading cards, I created these three minute podcasts to help card readers learn as I did. Ok... they aren't EXACTLY 3 minutes. I'm not THAT good! But I am around that 2.5 to 3.5 minute mark, with special episodes sometimes being longer. Please know there is so much more to know, but this should give a beginner some basics.

For people that already have a familiarity with the cards, taking in the podcast may be a great way to focus on the lessons. For those that would do better with accompanying visuals, I would recommend searching for the card for viewing in the deck, on your computer or phone. I have used the Rider Waite deck to build this podcast course, because it is the deck that I learned on, and it is still my favorite tarot card deck.

Even though I love the woo woo nature of cards, astrology and numerology, it can be confusing when discussing the technical aspects of the cards, and flip flopping in and out of the fluff makes it hard to learn a new skill. This audio course sticks to point so that a person learning can stay in their left brain of "doing" instead of "feeling". I love the fluff and the feeling piece, but for me, I needed to learn the cards before I could lean into how I felt and to incorporate the woo woo on my spiritual path. And .... we can only do so much in three minutes, in the spirit of focusing on basics to start, and repeating key messages (like the suit!) to help them stick.

    Happy learning!

I use the Rider Waite Tarot, but you can view the card while you listen using your own Tarot card deck or a computer. Today, we're exploring The Devil card, focusing on reversals. Let's start with the divine meaning of the card and then its meaning when reversed. The Devil upright represents temptation, bondage, and the shadow aspects of our lives such as addictions, fears, and unhealthy attachments. When reversed, The Devil takes on a more liberating energy. It suggests that you recognize what's been holding you back and take steps to free yourself from those chains. The reversed Devil is a card of empowerment. It indicates you're ready to confront your fears, let go of limiting beliefs, and reclaim control over your choices and actions. So, what happens when The Devil reversed appears in a reading? The Devil reversed can also point to a fear of fully letting go. You may know what needs to change but feel hesitant about taking the final steps. This card encourages you to trust the process and understand that the freedom you seek is worthwhile. Sometimes, the reversed card may indicate subtle influences still lingering in your life. Even as you make progress, there may be remnants of old patterns that need attention. The Devil reversed invites you to continue the work, knowing that even small steps lead to meaningful transformation. So, what is the best way to memorize The Devil card in reverse? Tying the card to a personal experience helps me remember it. For example, my reversed Devil card moment was choosing to move to contract jobs instead of employee roles. I felt all the fear and uncertainty but I kept taking those small steps toward my goal, until I arrived. An example was calling business schools to learn how to get on their rosters. I wasn't doing that all day long, but that is an example of an action I took, instead of sitting in fear and losing time doing research. I just started making steps until I started getting jobs. Eventually, I got busy. That's all for today's Devil Card Reversed episode. Remember, to memorize tarot, keep practicing tarot. Let's start with the divine meaning of the card and then its meaning when reversed.Temperance upright symbolizes balance, patience, and the art of harmonizing different elements. It's about finding peace through moderation and embracing a steady, mindful approach to life. When Temperance appears reversed, however, this harmonious energy becomes disrupted. It suggests imbalance, or a lack of coordination. The reversed Temperance card often points to a time when life feels out of sync. Potential causes can be making rushed decisions, or having difficulties finding a middle ground with someone. This card can be a message for you to pause, reassess, and restore your equilibrium. So, what happens when The Temperance reversed appears in a reading? When Temperance reversed appears in a reading, it's a sign to reflect on areas where you may be out of alignment. This card suggests taking a step back to assess what's causing this imbalance and how you can restore a sense of flow in your life. It may also indicate struggles with cooperation or compromise. If you're facing conflicts or miscommunication, the reversed Temperance card reminds you of the importance of finding common ground and approaching situations with patience and understanding. So, what is the best way to memorize the Temperance card in reverse? Tying the card to a personal experience helps me remember it. For example, my reversed Temperance card moment was when I found myself working on a team where I was definitely feeling out of place. I was hired as an instructional designer, and I had someone on the team assigning me graphic design work, which is not in my realm of genius. I am a strong junior in Photoshop and a weak junior in Illustrator, but I am a darn good technical writer and course creator. Even though I explained that I could try to help, it wasn't my expertise; it created tension and a misunderstanding that I didn't want to do the work. Once the person took the time to listen and understand that I wanted to help but that the assignment was outside my expertise, there were many apologies. Until then, I had to keep my composure until we got there. That's all for today's Temperance Card Reversed episode. Remember, to memorize tarot, keep practicing tarot. I use the Rider Waite Tarot, but you can view the card while you listen using your own Tarot card deck or a computer. Today, we're exploring the Death card, focusing on reversals. Let's start with the divine meaning of the card and then its meaning when reversed. The Death card upright is often misunderstood, but it is profoundly transformative. It represents endings, beginnings, and the cycles of renewal that are necessary for growth. However, this transformative energy is stalled or resisted when the Death card appears reversed. It can suggest fear of change, clinging to the past, or avoiding necessary endings that pave the way for new opportunities. The reversed Death card often points to a reluctance to relinquish old patterns, relationships, or situations that no longer serve you. It's a reminder that while change can be uncomfortable, it's also essential for growth and renewal. So, what happens when The Death appears in a reading? When Death reversed appears in a reading, it's a signal to examine what you might resist in your life. Are there situations, relationships, or habits that you're holding onto even though they no longer serve your highest good? This card asks you to reflect on what's keeping you from embracing necessary change and to consider how releasing the old could create room for the new. It may also indicate that you're feeling afraid of or overwhelmed by transformation. The reversed Death card reminds you that change is a natural part of life and that facing it with courage and trust can lead to renewal and growth. So, what is the best way to memorize the Death card in reverse? Tying the card to a personal experience helps me remember it. For example, my reversed Death card moment is my struggle with changing my diet. My sweet tooth has always been a struggle for me. Still, for the last 10 months, I have made a reasonably consistent effort to make good choices around carby and sugary foods. I am not remotely happy about this, and have a mindset issue with feeling deprived. I am adopting recipes to try and create yummy treats that are sugar-free, but trust me, I still remember what a slice of chocolate cake with chocolate icing tastes like. So, I am a work in progress, and I associate this journey with the Death Card reversed. I am transforming with my actions, but my brain is still struggling. That's all for today's Death Card Reversed episode. Remember, to memorize tarot, keep practicing tarot.
