About this listen
The masterpiece that started Terry Goodkind's New York Times bestselling epic Sword of Truth
In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary seeking help...and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence.
In a dark age it takes courage to live, and more than mere courage to challenge those who hold dominion, Richard and Kahlan must take up that challenge or become the next victims. Beyond awaits a bewitching land where even the best of their hearts could betray them. Yet, Richard fears nothing so much as what secrets his sword might reveal about his own soul. Falling in love would destroy them - for reasons Richard can't imagine and Kahlan dare not say.
In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword - to invoke within himself something more noble. Neither knows that the rules of battle have just changed...or that their time has run out.
Wizard's First Rule is the beginning. One book. One Rule. Witness the birth of a legend.

Very very dark story
Enjoyed this book until the protagonist began to torture and mentally molest young children. Makes the baddie look bad but not an enjoyable experience . Life is dark enough without this type of story to ‘escape’ into. I don’t recommend this author personally, I shall avoid him in the future. The reader was excellent, the material was well written but very very dark.

A Good Fantasy Book
When I first saw the wizards first rule on Audible, I have to admit what got me interested in listening to this audiobook was the beautiful cover which may my favourite of all. No wonder why Terry Goodkind has the original painting on his wall.
I wasn't sure about the book, it is over 34 hours long. I haven't put some much time, even surpassed American God's. And it being from the 90s, I expected back stories of every tree branch.
But to my surprise, I really enjoyed this! I will admit there are many parts to Wizards First Rule that drag on but walls of text. While it helped build the world and character, it did made lots of filler.
I stayed mainly for the characters and wanting to learn how they would save the world. I think it's pretty believable and interesting!
The main characters I felt were decently written, I liked Kahlan the most, Zed and Richard. However, I do feel that Richard suddenly becoming an action hero soured me but I think the events help build his character.
The world itself while interesting felt limited to only what we needed to know. The rest is for the expanded books. But its dark, gritty (surprisingly so) but also light hearted when needed.
The ending is something either you like or dislike, When given time to think. I felt it was clever and doesn't break the rules it established.
I didn't think much of the narrator initially because of the audio quality. But he actually does an incredible job expressing these different characters, am extra layar that made this worth the long wait. And he uses the distinct White and When in his accents.
From what I seen this book is part of a long series that's still going to this day. Unless you want to read the prequel abd it's many sequels, Wizard's First Rule is a book you can enjoy without the others. Treat it likes it's own thing.
I would definitely recommend this audio book despite its length. It is slow but it gets interesting along the way. Just beware of the dark moments that caught me by surprise.

Excellent Narrator
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This a great story made even better by the excellent narrator who brings it to life brilliantly.
He creates each character with a wide variety of voices and expresses the mood, tension and excitement. One of the best.

Not bad, not bad at all
Whipped through this very easily with some real heart stopping moments. Rachel and the box of Odin was a section where my heart was in my mouth a few times. The key characters of Richard , Khalen and Zed were a joy. The Narrators interpretation of Scarlet the dragon made me smile.
Only issue with this were some glaring plot holes in the story itself but they can almost be forgiven if you just jump in to this sword and sorcery fantasy. And leave the real world behind.

Almost perfect. Narrator can't say 'herbs' though. Almost turned it off when I heard 'erbs'

Fantastic Read/Listening
Would you consider the audio edition of Wizard's First Rule to be better than the print version?
As with all Audio books - you need to be a keen listener - It gives the reader/listener freedom to do other things at the same time as listening to the fantastic series that Terry Goodkind brings to us. The narrator that Terry has chosen is very good - he makes that book exciting
What did you like best about this story?
I love that this is the start of a series of books. You are introduced to the Characters within this series & leaves the listener at the edge of their seat right from the start to finish. the story has very good description (for excellent mental imagery) at the same time as keeping the story.
Which character – as performed by Sam Tsoutsouvas – was your favourite?
I love the way that Sam preforms Zed in this book. Zed is a very funny character.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes very much did not want to stop listening to this book or any other of the Kahlan and Richard series.
Any additional comments?
The whole series is out of this world. I have listened over and over again to this series. it is fantasy yet has principles that can be applied to real life. the Narrator does a fantastic job playing each character. The story in this book leaves you hankering for more. Anyone who listens to this book will not be disappointed.

Great story. Narration warms up
The story has an epic feel and is worth the listening time. I found the narration quite wooden in the first few chapters but it relaxes well after that.
