Summary

Billy, een labiele jongen, denkt als kind een moord gezien te hebben. Hoewel hij zich geen concrete details kan herinneren, gaat hij toch met zijn verhaal naar privédetective Cormoran Strike. Die neemt hem direct serieus, maar voor hij verder kan vragen, ontvlucht Billy in paniek zijn kantoor.

Strike en Robin Ellacott - ooit zijn assistente, nu zijn partner bij het detectivebureau - proberen Billy's verhaal tot op de bodem uit te zoeken. Het onderzoek leidt hen via de achterstraatjes van Londen naar de Houses of Parliament, en naar een fraai maar onheilspellend landhuis, ver weg op het platteland. Maar hun onderzoek verloopt verre van soepel: Strikes bekendheid als privédetective maakt het moeilijk om onopvallend te blijven werken, en zijn relatie met Robin staat onder hoogspanning.
