About this listen

An Introduction to Carnism

Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows offers an absorbing look at what social psychologist Melanie Joy calls carnism, the belief system that conditions us to eat certain animals when we would never dream of eating others. Carnism causes extensive animal suffering and global injustice, and it drives us to act against our own interests and the interests of others without fully realizing what we are doing. Becoming aware of what carnism is and how it functions is vital to personal empowerment and social transformation, as it enables us to make our food choices more freely - because without awareness, there is no free choice.

Thought provoking to our meat eating habit

Informative and well written book. Clearly explained meat eating impacts our health, animal well fair, environment and how that relays to our values and believes.

Also very considerate to touch on (another book) how to manage relationship between vegan vs other meat or seafood consumers.

An interesting book, an awful narrator

Already a vegan when I listened to this so hearing the stories of animal cruelty just reaffirmed my beliefs.

It will open the eyes of meat-eaters to a world where ignorance is bliss.

But the narrator is so irratating, it came across as patronising.

Life changing

Life changing read even For educated vegans, and I imagine more so for non vegans should they give it a chance. Can’t express the inspiration this book has given me to continue to advocate in the best way possible for the animals and the planet.

If I had the right I would suggest to every single person in the planet to read this book so they can make theirs future decisions based on facts and not fairytales! Also the subject should be part of school teaching!!!

Essential reading for everyone

This is a really interesting book whether or not you are for or against veganism. The book delves into our psyche and belief systems and explores why we believe what we believe. It's a great read for anyone who wants to question what is right or wrong. On top of that, the book provides a clear explanation of where our food comes from. I'm grateful that I live in Europe and not in the USA.

it's nit really "Why"

The beginning is about "Why" - the psychology around eating or not eating animals. Then, there are episode on top of episodes describing the cruelty animals go through and they have nothing to do with "Why" humans behave the way they do around that. So the title is very misleading.
in addition the narrator is very hard to listen to, she sounds like she can't keep it together and about to cry.
I sped it to the end and marked it done without actually finishing, It was not what I thought it would be.

Good for meat eaters and new vege people

A very decent introduction for people who know nothing about the meat & dairy production business.

Eye Opening & Impactful

One of the best audiobooks I have listened to. We are shielded from the sickening truth about modern day mega factory farming and the unimaginable cruelty inflicted on animals we murder. I’m not a vegan but will definitely be cutting down heavily on meat consumption and only buying Free Range Organic from now on. Kind of life changing. A must read unless you want to remain ignorant of the truth!
