"What is this, Captain? What is this?"

Any additional comments?

Or, to use another line from the book, "What the hell is going on?". I have no idea.
Jesse Copeland is a cop, and a drunk (possibly in the reverse order). When his partner, David, is shot and killed, it feels to Jesse that they had been specially targeted. And he's right. Plagued by nightmares, he is desperate to find the killer responsible. He might be an alcoholic with somewhat loose morals but, compared to everyone else ...
Meanwhile, bankers are also being murdered, the death of the self styled Don of Hollywood leaves a gap in the aspiring hierarchy, and the leaders of the community are dissolute, depraved, unprincipled, murderous - and mad. Seems like the only man in town not involved in conspiracy and depravity is the drunk. But what is real and what is just inside Jesse's drink sodden head and the nightmares that plague him?

This is a fantastic book, never a dull second and, confused though I may be, I simply couldn't put it down. This was, of course, in large part due to the spectacular dramatisation by David Bell whose mastery of voices, from the croaky whisper to the refined, was quite stunning. And the in between text was read with that perfect mix of the dissolute and of warm derision perfectly fitting the clever word building reeking with atmosphere.

When I was gifted a copy of Whiskey God by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom, I had not previously heard of the author, Robin Mountjoy and expected to hear a fairly standard noire detective story. How wrong I was. This book is short but fantastic. I have already listened twice and know that I will again. So many thanks to whoever authorised the gifting of this audio to me. It might have me confused but I loved it and heartily recommend it to anyone else who enjoys the unusual, brilliantly performed. I so hope that there is another soon
