About this listen

Rebellious rake. Brooding duke. Escaping an arranged engagement, he buys a wife he never intended to love… but loses his heart.

When Lady Emma Bardsley’s vile husband sells her at auction, she is purchased by the rakish duke of Loxchester. For Sebastian, buying a pig farmer’s wife is the perfect way to avoid an arranged engagement, no matter the scandal. But Emma has a secret—she’s a lady in disguise.

Emma hides her identity, hoping to run away. But she can’t hide her growing feelings for the amber-eyed rake who is showing her how much pleasure he can provide. Can she truly escape her terrible marriage for a passionate future with the duke who loves her?

Read by the award-winning narrator, Audie finalist, and Earphones for excellence in narration winner, Shane East, and Justine Eyre, a classically trained actor and narrator has been honored to receive a coveted Audie Award and multiple AudioFile Earphones Awards.

Historical romance at its best

If you are in the market for more regency era romance to feed your Bridgerton style obsession, then you want to get yourself these delightful books in Mariah Stone's Dukes & Secrets series.

It promises to be everything you could want, and this is just the prequel to a whole series of interconnected stories and first up we have our intrepid heroine Lady Emma Bardsley who is trapped in horrendous marriage to a man who decides to humiliate her into submission by selling her at a peasant's wife sale. But the plan backfires when the Duke of Loxchester, Sebastian happens to be in attendance and buys Emma in order to avoid having to marry anyone. He is your typical brooding and damaged Duke with some childhood trauma making it impossible for him to love anyone and now Emma finds herself trapped by yet another man. But as time goes on both Emma and Sebastian find themselves drawn to each other and thinking this fictional marriage might not be so bad at all.....

I loved the narration in this, I have listened to Justine Eyre for many years and is one of the leading ladies of historical romance audio (check out her narration of Sylvia Day's historical romance novels) and she does not disappoint here. It was comforting to listen to her, like slipping back into the past. It was exciting to listen to her opposite one of my new favourite voices, Shane East who I have been begging to do more historical romance. His voice is just made for it all decadent and swoony and restrained one minute and just unleashes his inner beast the next. Absolute PERFECTION!! More please.

Poor story

I found the story uninteresting and could not muster any interest in the characters. I had to force myself to finish.
