Summary

From the outside, the Davenports look like any other family living a completely ordinary life - until that devastating day when five-year-old Jonah is killed, and the family is torn apart. As the fury of guilt engulfs them, the Davenports slowly start to unravel, one by one.
Losing her son forces Rachel to withdraw into a frayed, fuzzy reality. Her husband, Sam, tries to remain stoic, but he's consumed by regret with the choices he's made. Eden mourns her brother, while desperately fighting to regain a sense of normalcy. And Aunt Ruth, Rachel's sister, works too hard to care for the family, even as her own personal issues haunt her.
Told from multiple points of view - including Jonah's - the family struggles to cope with unthinkable loss. But as they face their own dark secrets about that terrible day, they have a choice: to be swallowed up in sadness forever, or begin the raw, arduous ascent back to living.

Strange and Distant Point Of View
First, I can't understand how this book could be classified in the Mystery/Thriller genre. What was the mystery and where was the suspense? Even worse, nothing in this story felt true or sounded in any way real to me. I had the feeling as I listened that the author had absolutely never actually experienced first hand any of the things that happened in this novel. For example, I don't think Thomas could possibly have ever owned a dog--based on the way she wrote about the dog. I won't even address the issues related to the reality of the experience of losing a child. The whole thing just felt fake, dishonest and distant. What a waste.

Beautiful story...
And perfect narration!
I was getting a bit tired of my usual mystery books which are sometimes quite dark. This book was a wonderful change. Loved every minute of it!

Couldn’t listen to that awful voice...
I can’t rate the story or the overall performance because the voice of the dead boy was so grating and awful I could not listen further.
Too bad. Maybe I’ll try this one in print.

Audible version is Excellent !
I would have liked this book if I had merely read it. The story was intense, being told from the viewpoints of Jonah, his sister, Eden, his Aunt Ruth, his mom and dad, and the dog Shadow.
It was important to know the story from each of their viewpoints because only Jonah really knew the truth about the “awful day”, but each family member carried such needless guilt over the events.
In addition, we get to hear the voice of Maddie, the therapist who works with the family.
The narrators, without exception, were amazing ! They made a book that I would have “liked” if I had read it, a book that totally captured my imagination on all levels. They are the reason that a four star book turned into a five star event for me. The loss of a child is always difficult to read, but this book was quite different. Since we know that Jonah died from the very beginning, it is not a tear-jerker rendition of the accident. What we are given here is more of the psychology of the unnecessary guilt of the family members left behind. Almost anyone who has lost a loved one can relate to that in greater or lesser degrees. I never cried during this book, (although I often laughed or sympathized) but I felt overwhelming compassion for each of the characters. I wanted to tell them that Jonah’s death wasn’t their fault, which is what I think might have been one of the author’s goals.
Just as an aside...I found the dog’s viewpoint slightly annoying the first couple of times I heard it....until he started talking about “The CAT” ! Every time he said it, I had to laugh, picturing how badly that poor dog wanted that cat!
This was an amazing ensemble performance of a very good book!

Not worth it
The storyline was only mildly entertaining. It dragged on in a predictable way. The worst part was the voice of the little boy-AWFUL.

The narrator was not good
This book was good but the narrator was so bad with main character voice that I wanted to throw my phone! If you can get over the voice of the little boy it is a good sad story! I would read it myself instead of listening to it!

Family undergoes difficult time
This book is about a young boy who is undergoing many difficult times. I only read a few chapters but I felt it was a real downer to my mood and I just wanted to s-c-r-e-a-m. Child all you need is Jesus to handle all this. He is the answer to all my difficulties....no matter how many come at once. Call me a Jesus freak if you want. There are many people facing difficulties they don't have answers for and I can't help these characters, so it is useless for me to read this book.

It was just okay...very typical
