What do we do with the Bible? Does this ancient, sometimes violent and contradictory text have anything to teach us today?
Selective use of scripture - by preachers and politicians alike - has been employed to justify violence, racism, misogyny, homophobia...the list goes on. Still, we believe the Bible has something important to say. How can we read it in a contemplative and intelligent way?
In What Do We Do with the Bible?, Richard Rohr answers just this question. He offers a methodology of hermeneutics (interpretation) that creates a foundation for a hopeful and cosmic vision - incarnation from beginning to end of time. (He explores this vision further in The Universal Christ).
In particular, Father Richard focuses on Jesus' own method of using his Hebrew Scriptures. Jesus read between the lines to find and follow God's mercy, inclusion, and compassionate justice. For him, everything came down to relationship and transformation.

An important perspective to listen to
Really good how Richard Rohr can write so deeply and succinctly on this important topic. If you have come from any religious orthodoxy that has become your prison this will help release the lock and open the door. Thank you Richard for sharing.

Essential reading for spiritual development
A lucid exposition of how to engage with the bible and especially with Jesus. Spiritual not historical and a refreshing antidote to those caught in legalism .

great and very important ideas
As always Rohr takes us beyond the conditioning and cultural baggage to the bright and surprising truth about well whatever he is writing about. in this instance the bible . The book is very short though so I was surprised at the price tag

Narration doesn’t quite fit book
I’m probably spoiled as I am used to Rohr reading his own work- and that fits seamlessly and helps better I understanding.
This reader has a lovely voice but I don’t feel his thought and reading flow fits particularly well with Rohr’s writing. I had to work a bit harder than usual to make sense and flow.

What do we do with this book?
I was hoping for a book more about the Bible. Instead it came across as a long criticising essay about ignoring the teaching authority of the Roman Catholic Church and over spiritualizing an approach to the Bible. The book I think ignores a sense of human community involvement and also does appear to make out Jesus to be a mere devine teacher than not only the Son of God but God incarnate in His Son.

Hermeneutics? Hmmm
I think that his theological explanations went waaaay over my head, because it often seemed as if he was contradicting himself (or the Bible). I did come away with a few interesting gems, but as a whole, I would need someone to explain the content to me, which surely, defeats the object of the text?
