Summary

In Wealth, Poverty, and Politics, Thomas Sowell, one of the foremost conservative public intellectuals in the country, argues that political and ideological struggles have led to dangerous confusion about income inequality in America. Pundits and politically motivated economists trumpet ambiguous statistics and sensational theories while ignoring the true determinant of income inequality: the production of wealth. We cannot properly understand inequality if we focus exclusively on the distribution of wealth and ignore wealth-production factors such as geography, demography, and culture. Sowell contends that liberals have a particular interest in misreading the data and chastises them for using income inequality as an argument for the welfare state.

Refuting Thomas Piketty, Paul Krugman, and others, Sowell draws on empirical data to show that the inequality is not nearly as extreme or sensational as we have been led to believe. Transcending partisanship through a careful examination of data, Wealth, Poverty, and Politics reveals the truth about the most explosive political issue of our time.

Loved it. Written in the way that any lay man can understand and provides good explanation on ties between wealth, poverty and politics.

Clear explanation of economic disparities

Classic Thomas Sowell. A clear and concise explanation of the multiple factors that impact economic disparities. This should be required reading / listening for anybody desiring a deeper understanding of economic disparities and arms the reader / listener with ample "firepower" to disarm any ideological analyses thereof.

Thomas Sowell dropping bombs

Never before have I had my world view expanded by any book than this one. Forget what you think you know about people and how they've acted in the past or why and how wealth is created by people and ideas this is the book of all books.

Will inevitably change your views

Very well written and seemingly well researched analysis of the reasons for non random distribution of wealth/success of groups. What ever beliefs you have held with the best intentions this book will inevitably change some of them.

Fantastic

Brilliant analysis of reasons for inequalities in the world and among different groups.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in justice and inequality. Challenges a number of sacred cows and the obsession some superficial and narcissistic people have with spurious 'grievances' as the alleged causes of all economoc inequalities.

May upset some who are more interested in displaying their own virtue, than in facts and serious thinking about the issues. But if you're the latter type, you will love it.
