Summary

Bloomsbury presents We Are Bellingcat by Eliot Higgins, read by Eliot Higgins.

How did a collective of self-taught internet sleuths end up solving some of the biggest crimes of our time?

Bellingcat, the home-grown investigative unit, is redefining the way we think about news, politics and the digital future. Here, their founder - a high-school dropout on a kitchen laptop - tells the story of how they created a whole new category of information-gathering, galvanising citizen journalists across the globe to expose war crimes and pick apart disinformation, using just their computers.

From the downing of Malaysia Flight 17 over the Ukraine to the sourcing of weapons in the Syrian Civil War and the identification of the Salisbury poisoners, We Are Bellingcat digs deep into some of Bellingcat’s most successful investigations. It explores the most cutting-edge tools for analysing data, from virtual-reality software that can build photorealistic 3D models of a crime scene, to apps that can identify exactly what time of day a photograph was taken.

In our age of uncertain truths, Bellingcat is what the world needs right now - an intelligence agency by the people, for the people.

This audiobook contains several highly offensive terms, quoted from the manifesto of a third party. This in no way reflects the views of the author, the publisher or anyone associated with the publication and distribution of this book.

A vital book about a vital subject: the truth

This book should be read and studied by all aspiring journalists, or anyone interested in how to tell truth from fiction in the internet age. Eliot Higgins narrates the book well enough but there's so much to get your head around that it sometimes feels like the pace is too fast. The pause button is useful - I even went back over certain sections to fully digest what I'd heard. Anyway, this is essential reading/listening so don't hesitate to get it.

story is true

Interesting buildup of knowledge and reality opening a closed world of poisoning, murder and trolling to cover up the truth.

Shines a light into the shadows

I really enjoyed listening to this. These folks are inspirational in their quest to Identify Varify and Amplify the deeds of those who think they are above the law and assume they can get away with literal murder.

Bellingcat are the equivalent of Hugh Dowding and his insistence of Radar in the Battle of Britain.

These people, from all nations gives me so much hope. Thank you.

Good for orientation, not education

Following Bellingcats story is interesting, and it’s nice to get to hear about the different cases. If you are looking for a story and just want to hear a bit about bellingcat and the potential of OSINT this will not dissapoint. However, if you are Looking for a more practical how to guide to learn more about the trade this is not for you!
