Best summation of the military and regional history of mesoameric I’ve come across. I would recommend this title to anyone interested in the Mexica world pre conquest. It’s even better after having read the source material: Cortes, de Castillo, the Various codexes etc.

Would you consider the audio edition of Warlords of Ancient Mexico to be better than the print version?

The audio version helps immensely with pronouncing the names and cities throughout the book although I can imagine that seeing the printed names may help form some familiarity between the myriad of characters quicker. I believe that the print version contains several maps etc. which again would be very helpful.

What did you like best about this story?

It's the history of the rise and fall of indigenous Mesoamerican culture, the whole thing is utterly fascinating.

Have you listened to any of Paul Christy’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have not. Initially I thought the performance would be an issue but it was anything but.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Audible really needs some new questions of History books.

If getting this audible version it would be best to spend some time throughout looking at maps of the region. All the moving’s of each civilisation can get a little disorientating.

Very detailed history of the Tepanec and Mexica (Aztecs). Utterly enthralling and somehow left me feel sympathetic towards a culture that sacrificed hundreds of thousands people to their gods.

Interesting, if you are into history like me. Tip. Listen on x2 speed. Narrator sounds pissed on normal.

By the way , what a bunch of mean f***ed up people they were. It would be unlikely anyone got past 30, with all these hearts being ripped out ! Cortes put a stop to all this sh**.

As someone who is not well read on the subject, the many groups of people, and many names can be confusing. It takes work to keep up, but you’ll get the overall idea, and it will leave you truly appreciating the forgotten histories. You will see the intellects, the brutality, and the beauty of this forgotten world, and even a slight bit appreciation of the much hated and controversial Spanish invaders. It also paints a picture of American resistance, making the conquest less of an easy walkover than what I’ve mostly heard it explained as being.

So many exotic and mystifying titles and names caused my head to spin. Not being very familiar with this history and not being able to constantly refer back to the script like one would with a physical text, I found myself frequently lost during the first few hours. With time, the colour and astonishing drama of the Aztec kingdoms broke through, although learning from many dubious and mystical sources, one wonders how much to believe. I do not doubt that the main outlines and archeological detail is precise.
