A fornire lo spunto è stato un libro-inchiesta del giornalista Michael Hastings, "The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in Afghanistan", pubblicato nel 2012. Hastings ha riportato la sua esperienza - durata un mese - in compagnia dello staff del generale statunitense Stanley McChrystal, quando McChrystal era comandante in capo delle truppe NATO in Afghanistan.
