Summary

Wealthy Alice Whittaker is known for her generosity, and when her friend Nesta vanishes Alice is determined to find her and help her. If that means money, well, Alice has plenty of it. Then the handsome Mr Fielding enters her life, ten years younger than Alice and they marry. But when Alice starts to feel sick -- a virus perhaps, something she just can't shake, her husband seems determined to keep her at home. Is he just being a doting husband who wants his wife to get better? Or is he trying to keep her from finding Nesta? Unwell though she is, Alice can't help asking questions. And the more she learns about Nesta's disappearance, the more certain she becomes that her own life is in peril

Clear Twists

I thought I'd cracked this one from the first chapter but then, no and then again I thought I was right. Turned out I couldn't have been more wrong.
Clever. It plays on how the author knows we think, especially as a reader of her own genre.

Disappointing, so dull

Oddly banal, unmoving. Stock characters. I persisted, hoping for an interesting denouement, but found the ending unconvincing. A waste of time, unfortunately.

Enjoyable.

An enjoyable book. Quite intriguing but I didn't guess the end at all. The narration was first class.

superb writing

Superbly written and, even though I guessed part of it quite early on, the perspective of the narrative was intriguing and I just had yo keep listening. Beautifully narrated too.

Enjoyed but the ending

Enjoyed the story and the narration but agree with the last couple of reviews regarding the ending abrupt and disappointing.
I thought there would be an unforeseeable twist to the ending.

Not like Ruth Rendell

I found it a bit boring at times and struggled to finish it. Not like Ruth Rendell at all

Great story and twist at the end was a surprise!

I really enjoyed listening to this and it was not what I had expected. Great entertainment and love the narrators voice she brings all the characters to life.

Enjoyable but disappointing ending

I enjoyed most of this novel with its setting in a pretty village somewhere in the mid 20th century, and the mystery of the missing woman. I was suspecting most of the characters, the vicar, the doctor, the greengrocer, and all. However I found the ending disappointing and abrupt. It could have been so much better.

Mixed feelings

There's some lovely detailed, atmospheric writing here and about 3/4 of the way through, I was caught up in the suspense, but then towards the end it becomes something more like a 'cosy' whodunnit (can't say more for fear of spoilers) and I found the ending disappointing.

Trollope Novels Are MORE than Politics

I wasn't going to bother doing a review, because I got fairly bored with this.
But the uininformed people who talk about Trollope's novels being only political are just showing their ignorance, and that they have not understood his wonderful novels.
Listening to audiobooks of Trollope's novels, particularly those recorded by Timothy West, are THE one most wonderful ways to escapism. I recommend them for the depressed, the distracted, the bored and unhappy ... in fact everyone. Because his lovelyl narratives on relationships and the characterisations, are just the best.
