Summary

The year 12,090 AD. It is a dark time for the world. Humanity is just crawling out from under 300 years of domination by the race of vampires known as the Nobility. The war against the vampires has taken its toll; cities lie in ruin, the countryside is fragmented into small villages and fiefdoms that still struggle against nightly raids by the fallen vampires - and the remnants of their genetically manufactured demons and werewolves.

Every village wants a Hunter - one of the warriors who have pledged their laser guns and their swords to the eradication of the Nobility. But some Hunters are better than others, and some bring their own kind of danger with them....

Vampire Hunter Deez Nuts!!!!!!!

I loved this first entry in this legendary series. I chose this version over the Graphic Audio version because I'm a completist and this is the original unabridged version. My only complaint is that Boehmer's cadence is just a tad slow for my taste. After adjusting the audio speed to x1.30 I found it to be the perfect sweet spot. The only time it sounds a little squirrely is when Boehmer voices females, but is completely tolerable after hearing a couple of times. I really appreciate his efforts in finding a unique voice for each individual and dedicated such a great effort that it truly gave the experience a cinematic feel while losing none of Kikuchi's fantastic immersion into his amazing universe. If a pulpy western starring a quiet mysterious but badass protagonist in a gothic horror with lovecraftian undertones seems up your alley then you've found the perfect scratch for that itch. Might I say you have great taste as well!

Never seen the movie, super can wait for it.

The less you know about this if you have next to no knowledge about this classic, the better. Let your mind play the movie. Expect the cross between genres this novel took. Also a great performance delivery.

Pubesent Anime

This book is pretty bad... unless maybe you are a preteen and are interested in constantly hearing how beautiful the characters are.
Maybe something was lost in the translation but its pretty bad when the 'beautiful' 17 year old girl decides to take off her clothes during a fight to distract her foe. Oh, and of course she is described as even more beautiful.

The characters are boring and childish and the dialog sounds like something out of the old Speed Racer cartoon.
The narration drones on with a boring cadence.
I couldn't finish and will probably try to return it.

The narrator was phenomenal

The story was ok, I didn’t like how the author is trying to tell us how to feel in certain scenes. The narrator was phenomenal he did a great job it’s just this story wasn’t the best

Character description gets redundant really fast.

Why did you have to tell us how beautiful the main characters are in every paragraph? we get it they're good looking. You can't even get throught a fight without telling us how beautiful the main characters are. Its weird, It's like every character is fantasizing about every other character every scene. it made it hard to finish. Story could have been decent otherwise. I don't know if I could make it through the another of these books.

Fairly Hilarious

I didn't know what genre this was when I bought it, and won't continue with the bazillion followup stories there are. Nevertheless I found it pretty funny and entertaining - like listening to Saturday morning cartoons - and the narrator has the perfect voice for it. Only 3 stars because not really my cup of tea so I can't judge how good it is.

Blast from past

Read this many years ago. Loved it then and now. Seen movie recently and surprised at missing details, plot adjustments.

I like it overall

I saw the anime movie and I was thrilled to know about this story, however my only comment I have is in some parts there are unnecessary details regarding weapons or side characters, history.

Vampire Hunter D

Fun story. it's good to go back to the beginning. The narrator did a good job as well, albeit a little slow. Sped it up to 1.15 and it worked out great. will get the next one at some point.

A bit flat, but it’s still a classic

I discovered the VHD novels shortly after they began publication in English when I was a teenager. I heard about the movies, but was too young at the time to rent them, so I bought the novels, following the publication schedule and reading every single one for 8 or so years! (I never did end up seeing the movies haha)

I LOVE this series, and with time being so short now, I can’t say how thrilled I am to know I can re-live my adolescent joy almost 17 years (oh no time is coming for me) after I first experienced it.

As other reviewers commented, the performance does fall a bit flat sometimes, but overall this audiobook has grown on me! I can’t wait to listen to all of these, and I hope all of them are made available via unabridged audiobook. No offense to GraphicAudio, I’m sure the audio dramas are great… I just wanna re-experience this part of my adolescence.
