Summary

Have you, a friend or family member been living with undiagnosed autism?

For every visibly autistic person you meet, there are countless 'masked' people who pass as neurotypical. They don't fit the stereotypical mould of autism and are often forced by necessity to mask who they are, spending their entire lives trying to hide their autistic traits. In particular, there is evidence that autism remains significantly undiagnosed in women, people of colour, trans and gender non-conforming people, many of whom are only now starting to recognise those traits later in life.

Blending cutting-edge research, personal insights and practical exercises for self-expression, Dr Devon Price examines the phenomenon of 'masking', making a passionate argument for radical authenticity and non-conformity. A powerful call for change, Unmasking Autism gifts its listeners with the tools to uncover their true selves and build a new society—one where everyone can thrive on their own terms.

Very American

I knew the author was American, but there’s lots of discussion around ‘popular’ and ‘well known’ characters from film and tv I’ve never heard of. Lots of talk about laws in USA.
It’s a shame I was so looking forward to this, but it’s full of LGBTQ references which don’t relate to me and I felt made some of the points confusing. It left me feeling left out of the ‘gang’ once again.
I suppose there were nuggets of new and useful ideas like unmasking support and I really like the idea of ‘strawberry friends’.
I quite liked the delivery as it was calming.
A good book for reference and the history of how autism got to where it is today.
Some of the stories were quite bizarre.
I’m pleased I read it, but I think it’s more appropriate for the American market.

Ok

A lot of the content was interesting however became an effort to finish it the longer it went on. Author seems to have a bit of victim mentality. All the gender nonsense ruined it for me.

Terrible!

DNF...could not carry on with the BS this person was speaking!

0☆

• Very repetitive even in the first 2 chapters.
• Seems to be only relevant if you are living in the USA.
• I felt they focused on race and gender identity a lot more than "Unmasking Autism."

Maybe if I had carried on I could have learnt about unmasking, but I have a feeling that wouldn't be the case.

This had such good reviews on TikTok, but I think they must have read a different book!

An inspirational guide to living unapologetically

This book was recommended to me by a intuitive & intelligent woman with AuDHD a year ago. I've just received a diagnosis myself & decided to listen to her & this book's advice to sooth myself.

Both their advice has given me instruction how to go about understanding myself & living a life that suits me & a bucket load of understanding about others in similar & other minority groups.

There's an unpleasant history, bias of criteria for assessment, gender non conformity, other neuro divergence & just how to be cool with yourself & resist ableist opinions of you or others in these atypical & unfairly marginalised communities.

I'm a little less concerned & overewhelmed than before listening & a bit more equipt & brave to figure out who I am now really & how to help myself be more me.

It's encouraging & intellectual so I've saved myself some years of intensive researching for those that way inclined.

There will be a certain level of sadness in accepting ableism is a strong & dangerous force in today's world. The value & necessity of austistic & neuro divergent minds in society is evolutionarily logical.

I'd recommend this book to anyone with visible or invisible "traits" of neuro diversity & neuro-brilliance.

Amazing book

I think this will turn out to be one of the most important books I ever read, as the father of an autistic master masker. I've been trying to help him being less masked for quite a while, but this will help tremendously.

Yep, I'm masking.

Loved this book. So many similar challenges and responses I'm in awe of. I don't assign myself with any LGBTQ references but the masking definitions and coping mechanisms are spot on.

Highly recommend anyone suspecting the same to have a read/listen. I've already bought two hard copies for myself and my mother.

Good listen 👍

Good at exploring the realities of autism in our world from different perspectives and offers Good advice for autistic people and gives non autistic people the chance to take a peek into our lives. I recommend this book to anybody who is interested in learning more about autism.

Outstanding and accessible

In this book, Price manages to accomplish several things simultaneously. The book is an excellent summary of the current research - both formal and anecdotal - surrounding autism as a neurodivergent identity rather than a pathology. Throughout the book Price speaks directly to readers who are or suspect themselves to be autistic, using real life examples of well fleshed-out individuals to illustrate different aspects of masking - and unmasking autistic traits. I’m addition to this the book provides values integration exercises to help an autistic person access and understand what is most important to them. The exercises are grounded in the text, and the recording includes a Bonus PDF so that listeners can go back over exercises, lists and tables of information in their own time.
Highly recommend the book to anyone who is seeking to understand their own autistic identity, or even to understand and support an autistic loved one.
Refreshingly, Price also seeks to centre the voices of autistics of colour, non-speaking individuals, women and gender non-conforming autistics.
